HIV-1 replication inhibitors

Nicolaou recently demonstrated the use of a complex intermolecular [2 + 2]-cycloaddition reaction as the final step in the total synthesis of biyouyanagin A, a potent HIV replication inhibitor (213, Equation 18) [138]. Irradiation of diene 211 and enone 212 led to regio- and stereoselective cycloaddition to furnish the cxo product 213, predicted to be favored on steric grounds.
