Judging from scientific publications, the number of workers and the rate and volume of investigations on total steroid synthesis is rising continually. This tendency can be characterized by the number of papers published on total synthesis over five-year periods (Fig. 1). Consequently, the history of total steroid synthesis can be no means be regarded as ended, and new successes in this field may be expected in the coming years.
