Histiocytic sarcomas

Tetrafluoroethylene was tested for carcinogenicity in one study in mice and one study in rats by inhalation. In both sexes of mice, it increased the incidence of hepatocellular carcinomas, histiocytic sarcomas and haem angiosarcomas in the liver. In rats of both sexes, it increased the incidence of hepatocellular carcinomas and kidney tubule cell adenomas.

The authors concluded that there is some evidence of carcinogenicity of BP based on increased incidence of renal tubular adenomas in male F344/N rats, hepatocellular adenomas in male B6C3Fi mice, and histiocytic sarcomas in female B6C3Fi mice. The evidence of mononuclear ceU leukemia and histiocytic sarcomas in female F344/N rats was considered to be equivocal (Rhodes et al. 2007).
