HIPS on topside facilities

Seeing the potentially important consequences (human, enviromnental and economic) of the accident, this HIPS is qualified as hard, which, with regards to our rule, defines a SIL 4 objective. 

The safety system against the blow-by gas therefore comprises  

PSD and HIPS share the same SDV 1 valve but use dedicated solenoid valves to control it. 

The assessment of the probability of accidental opening of the control valve CV can be estimated from the feedback compiled in reliability databases (e.g. OREDA) and/or the expertise of operators exploiting production facilities. In this case, there is a probability of accidental opening of the control valve CV of about 0.1 per year. It follows that the PSD and HIPS barriers are requested less than once per year and, according to the lEC, they operate at low demand mode. As explained in previous chapters, it therefore requires calculations of the PFD type.
