The tree-like shape of a river basin allows it to take the paths of least resistance down to the river mouth. Tiny rivulets upstream are repeated and combined into larger flows downstream. The engineer Adrian Bejan has developed a theory for how this flow is built up from its smallest components in almost any material. This efficient complexity happens naturally as water flows down a hill.
