High-molecular-weight epoxy monomer

Vinyl ester resins arc manufactured through an addition reaction of an epoxy resin with an acrylic monomer, such as acrylic acid, methaciylic add. or the half-ester product of an hydroxyalkyl acrylate and anhydride. In contrast, the polyester resins are condensation products of dibasic acids and palyhydric alcohols. The relatively low-molecular-weight precise polymer structure of the vinyl ester resins is in contrast to the high-molecular-weight random structure of the polyesters. [Pg.1688]

For instance an epoxy-functionalized polyester from the suberin monomer cis-9,10-epoxy-18-hydroxyoctadecanoic acid (see also Chapter 1) was synthesized by Olsson et al. [30]. The lipase-catalyzed polymerization was performed in toluene in the presence of 4A molecular sieves for 68 h and high molecular weight of epoxy-functionalized polyester was obtained (M , =20000 M JMn =2.2). [Pg.87]

These hydroxy-terminated polyesters may have applications as prepolymers for other high molecular weight polymers. These could condense with diisocyanates to produce polyurethane foams [44], either flexible or rigid. They also may have compatibility with epoxy resins and polyester to give rise to polyester epoxy resins, polyester-polyamide [41], and polyester-polyether copolymers. The further condensation with some unsaturated monomer may result in thermoset film formers. They can be used as a mildness additive in metal-working lubricants. [Pg.593]
