The following mercaptans are prepared by the same procedure in the yields indicated isobutyl, 56% n-octyl, 73% n-dodecyl, 77% cetyl, 64% /J-phenylethyl, 70% sec-butyl, 64% hexamethylene, 63% and decamethylene, 48%. Double the above molar amounts of hydrobromic acid and thiourea are used in the preparation of hexamethylene and decamethylene mercaptan. 

Synthetic methods for the preparation (rf blocked sulfhydryl monomers and their subsequent condensation polymerization were illustrated by the work of Overberger and Aschkenasy (50). Employing the carbo-benzoxy blocking group, a mercaptan-containing polyamide (XXXVII) of a,a-dithioladipyl chloride (XXXVI) and hexamethylenediamine was prepared. Similarly, a polyurethane (XXXIX) synthesized from 2-benzylthiomethyl-l,4-butanediol (XXXVIII) and hexamethylene diisocyanate yielded a polymercaptan on debenzylation. 

Synthesis of polyamides containing disulfide linkages were achieved by condensing 2,2 -dithiobis(acetyl chloride) and 33 -dithiobis(propionyl chloride) with diamines like hexamethylene diamine [143]. The polymers are crystalline and can be drawn into fibers. The disulfide bonds in the main chain are dissociated by mercaptan exchange reactions [144] ...
