Heuristic learning

Definition 3-7 Algorithmic learning is performed by the sole execution of a learning algorithm. Heuristic learning is at least partially based on heuristics. 

Such infrequent measurements make the control of the product quality difficult. At best, the operators have learned a set of heuristics that, if adhered to, usually produces a good product. However, unforeseen disturbances and undetected equipment degradations not accounted for by the heuristics still occur and affect the product. In addition, there are periods of operation when the final process step produces a degraded product in spite of near-perfect upstream operations. 

Anatomically, the chemosensory cells of these animals share a unifying set of characteristics they are bipolar neurons with ciliated dendrites closely apposed to the environment and axons that project into the central nervous system from a peripherally located cell body. There are modifications to the perceptron learning rule to help effect faster convergence. Simplistic and heuristic similarity-based approaches can hardly produce as good predictive models as modern statistical and machine learning methods that are able to assess quantitatively biological or physicochemical properties. QSAR-based virtual screening consists of direct assessment of activity values (numerical or binary) of all compounds in the database followed by selection of hits possessing desirable activity. Mathematical methods used for models preparation can be subdivided into classification and regression approaches. The former decide whether a given compound is active, whereas the latter numerically evaluate the activity values. Classification approaches that assess probability of decisions are called probabilistic.

This category of methods introduces the functional context in form of heuristic rules or tries to learn the context from comparative sequence analysis. 

Heuristic An expert s "rule of thumb" used in solving a problem. Heuristics provide directions which can speed up the time a program takes to solve a problem. Using heuristics does not guarantee that the best solution will be found. This limitation is acceptable in cases where more possible solutions exist than can be explored. It can also refer to self-learning.
