General accounts of prototropic tautomerism have been presented by Ingold and Baker" these include an outline of the historical development of the subject in which heteroaromatic compounds are discussed incidentally, and, therefore, such a historical account will not be given here. The first detailed survey of the prototropic tautomerism of heteroaromatic compounds appeared in four chapters in Volumes 1 and 2 of Advances in Heterocyclic Chemistry published in 1963. In 1976, a monograph entitled The Tautomerism of Heterocycles was issued as Supplement 1 to Advances in Heterocyclic Chemistry to update the work published in 1963.
