A rule of thumb in classical complex saccharide synthesis is that the addition of each monosaccharide unit requires on an average seven steps. Although there have been striking improvements in synthetic methods in recent years, the synthesis of a trisaccharide, for example, can still take 10 or more steps. The application of glycosidases to the synthesis of complex hetero-oligosaccharides represents a considerable saving in time and materials, and hence in overall cost. [Pg.14]

The n.m.r. spectra of seven hetero-oligosaccharides isolated from blood-group substance H have been recorded. The data obtained confirmed their structures. [Pg.244]

An efficient one-pot procedure for removal of 4,6-O-ethylidene groups from D-galactopyranose residues in hetero-oligosaccharides has been described, involving acetolysis, followed by hydrolysis and acetylation. ... [Pg.48]

Symposia reports have been released on the preparation of hetero-oligosaccharides using glycosidases and on the solid-phase preparation of glycopeptides on resins with allyl anchoring groups. ... [Pg.65]

The pairwise additivity principle when applied to bichromophoric exciton-coupled systems, such as those composed of 4-bromobenzoate (BB) and 4-methoxycinnamate (MC) derivatives of cyclic polyols, yields more information from the CD spectra of complex molecules173. In such systems both degenerate ( homo") interactions, i.e., BB/BB and MC/MC, and nondegenerate ("hetero") interactions, i.e., BB/MC, contribute to the exciton CD spectra. As the homo exciton Cotton effects arc well separated (BB 236/253 nm, MC 287/322 nm) a unique pattern of CD curves is obtained for each derivative of cyclic tri- or tetraol. This method is particularly useful in identification of glycopyranosides174, a procedure essential for microscale structure determination of oligosaccharides by the exciton chirality method175. [Pg.525]

Polymers of monosaccharides may be either of the homo- or hetero-type. When the number of units in a glycosidic chain is in the range of 2 to 10, the resulting compound is an oligosaccharide. More than 10 units are usually considered to constitute a polysac-... [Pg.108]
