Hertzian waves

These waves were initially called "Hertzian waves",—for example, by Marconi77, the inventor of the radio. The solutions to these wave equations can be shown to be transverse electromagnetic (TEM) waves (Problem 2.7.5, Fig. 2.9).

For polar substances the measurement must be made in the remote infra-red, as for short Hertzian waves the refractive index increases again as predicted by Debye s theory. 

Radiations having wavelengths of the order of millimeters and centimeters are called microwaves those still longer are called radio waves (or Hertzian waves).
