Fig. 2. A heme group, the compound of an iron atom and a protoporphyrin molecule. Four of these hemes are present in the hemoglobin molecule they are responsible for the red color of hemoglobin, and also are involved in the combination of hemoglobin with oxygen.

These other data come from experiments made by Wyman and Ingalls in the early days of the war, which were interrupted and never published. A number of experiments were made at 25° on two different preparations of crystalline horse hemoglobin dissolved in strong urea solutions (M = 4.5 — 6) buffered with 0.3 M phosphate at pH 7. The degree of saturation of the hemoglobin with oxygen was determined from measurements of light absorption with a photoelectric cell, controls...
