Hemicellulose fragments

Frost resistance in wheat seedlings is proposed to involve, among other cellular responses, activate degradation of cell wall polysaccharides. This probably liberates hemicellulose fragments that may play a role in the cold adaptation process [60, 61]. However, a hnk between structures and physiological action is currently lacking. [Pg.353]

Another approach to produce chemicals via degraded molecules is the fast pyrolysis of biomass at high temperatures in the absence of oxygen. This gives gas, tar and up to 80 wt.% of a so-called bio-oil liquid phase, which is a mixture of hundreds molecules. Some of compounds produced by pyrolysis have been identified as fragments of the basic components of biomass, viz. lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose. The bio-oil composition depends upon the nature of starting... [Pg.57]

Analyses of the hemicelluloses of woods indicate the presence of a high proportion of D-xylose residues in association with those of a methyl ether of a hexuronic acid.64 The first evidence for the chemical structure of such wood xylans came from the isolation of xylobiose, xylotriose,65 and the aldobiouronic acid 0-(4-0-methyl-a-D-glucosyluronic)-(l —> 2)-D-xylose acid (IX)22 from partial hydrolyzates of aspen wood. The role of such oligosaccharide fragments in wood xylans became more apparent as the result of a study of a xylan from European beechwood,26 in which it was shown... [Pg.442]

Bio-oil from rapid pyrolysis is usually a dark brown, free-flowing liquid having a distinctive smoky odor. It has significantly different physical and chemical properties compared to the liquid from slow pyrolysis processes, which is more like a tar. Bio-oils are multicomponent mixtures comprised of different size molecules derived primarily from depolymerization and fragmentation reactions of the three key biomass building blocks cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. Therefore, the elemental composition of biooil resembles that of biomass rather than that of petroleum oils. Basic properties of biooils are shown in Table 33.7. More detail on fuel-related characteristics is provided in the literature.571... [Pg.1511]

Under acidic conditions, however, the liberation of free acetic acid during hydrolysis of the esters can increase the acidity and enhance further hydrolysis of not only additional ester groups, but acetal linkages and lignin bonds as well. A prime example is the so-called autohydrolysis reaction (2) in which acetic acid liberated by steam can cause complete hydrolysis of the hemicelluloses and convert the lignin into soluble fragments. [Pg.578]

In the hemicellulosic fraction from rice endosperm cell walls, methylation and Smith degradation analyses as well as celiulase fragmentation studies have confirmed the presence of a mixed (1 3), (1 4)-/3-D-glucan in which blocks of... [Pg.259]
