Because of steric effects, TMXDI is less reactive than the trifunctional derivatives of hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) (1,6-diisocyanatohexane)... 

In certain niche applications, aliphatic isocyanates, such as isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), hexamethylene diisoeyanate (HDI), methylene 4,4 -biscyclo-hexylisocyanate (H12MDI), and polymeric versions of these diisocyanates, are used, e.g., in instances where light stability or reduced reactivity is needed. These isocyanates usually cost more than the aromatic diisocyanates. Thus, they are used in adhesive areas that can Justify the higher costs. 

Aromatic diisocyanates such as toluene 2,4-diisocy-anate (TDI) and methylene di-p-phenylene isocyanate (MDl) are usually used. Aliphatic diisocyanate such as hexanediisocyanate (HDI), although it has the advantage that the TPU synthesized from it is softer and not prone to turning yellow, is seldom used due to its high cost.

Example 7. Solvent-Borne, One-Component, Moisture-Cure, Aliphatic Polyurea Coating. This example is of a more traditional one-component coating formulation using a volatile solvent as a diluent. The active ingredient is a modified HDI, Desmodur N-75 BA from Bayer. 

Example 9. Two-Component Waterborne Polyurethane Coating. This example utilizes the PUD from Example 8 in a two-component, waterborne coating formulation. An HDI-based, water-dispersible isocyanate is also prepared.

It follows, that when ho is large compared with hD2, K2 and hD2 are approximately equal, and, when hD2 is large compared with hDi. K, and hm are. almost equal.
