Half-wave rectifier

A half-wave rectifier is able to provide only a unidirectional d.c, power source which may also contain many a.e, ripples (Figure 6.24(a)).. A full-wave rectifier is employed to reduce such ripples, on the one hand, and provide a d.c, pow cr in forward as well as reverse directions, on the other.. A fixed forward and reverse d.c. power is required for an inverter unit when it is employed to control an a.e. machine. The fuU-wave rectifier utilizes both halves of the input sinusoid one possible implementation is shown in Fig. 10.15(a). The fuU-wave rectifier consists of two half-wave rectifiers connected to a load R. The secondary transformer winding is center tapped to provide two equal voltages Vi for each half-wave rectifier. When the node A is at positive polarity V with respect to node B, D1 will be forward biased and D2 will be reverse biased. Therefore, diode D1 will conduct and the current will flow through R back to the center tap of the transformer. When the node B is at positive polarity Vi with respect to node A, D2 will be forward biased and diode D1 will be reverse biased. The current conducted byD2 will flow through R and back to the center tap. The current through R is always in the same direction... [Pg.1027]

Consider a diode half-wave rectifier with a filter capacitor C and a resistor R as shown in Fig. 10.21(a). When the input voltage V) is positive, the diode conducts and charges the capacitor C. The output capacitor C1 can be treated in a similar manner as a capacitive-input type filter. C1 is chosen so that it is large enough to supply the full load current for the entire half-cycle until the time when the half-wave rectified output rises high enough to forward bias diode Dl.
