As shown in Table IV, the highest catalytic activity of metal halides used as Lewis acid for the alkylation reaction of ferrocene with 2 was observed in methylene chloride solvent. Among Lewis acids such as aluminum chloride, aluminum bromide, and Group 4 transition metal chlorides (TiCl4, ZrCU, HfCU), catalytic efficiency for the alkylation decrea.ses in the following order hafnium chloride > zirconium chloride > aluminum chloride > aluminum bromide. Titanium chloride... [Pg.155]

Hafnium salts are mild irritants of the eye and the skin and have produced liver damage in animals. In mice, the LDso of hafnyl chloride by intraperitoneal injection was 112 mg/kg. In cats, intravenous administration of hafnyl chloride at lOmg/kg was fatal. Rats fed a diet containing 1% for 12 weeks showed slight changes in the liver, consisting of perinuclear vacuolization of the parenchymal cells and coarse granularity of the cytoplasm. The application of 1 mg of hafnium chloride to the eyes of rabbits produced transient irritation. Topical application of hafiiium chloride crystals to unabraded rabbit skin produced transient edema and erythema application to abraded skin caused ulceration. ... [Pg.363]

Hafnium tetrachloride forms many octahedral complexes of structure HfCl4L2 with neutral donors. For example, with tetrahydrofuran, it forms HfCl4(THF)2. Mononuclear and dinuclear hafnium chloride ions have been reported, produced by reaction with triphenylchloromethane, CPhsCl (Pampaloni, G. O. 1996. J. Organomet. Chem. 518, 189). [Pg.334]

The behavior of hafnium chloride in aqueous IM NaCl has been studied over the temperature interval 25°-73°C. Total hafnium concentration was varied from 0.60 to 30 mM, and hydroxyl number was varied from 0 to 3. Rayleigh turbidities and pH values were measured as functions of time. The existence of polynuclear species was confirmed, but the measured properties change slowly with time, the most rapidly at the highest temperature. The rate of hydrolysis is related analytically to total hafnium concentration, hydroxyl number, and temperature. [Pg.243]
