When black powder is used to propel rockets it is classed as a composite propellant (where the fuel and oxidiser are intimately mixed) and forms part of a rocket motor in which the powder is compressed to form a monolithic single grain inside a combustion chamber as shown in Figure 3.1. As well as gunpowder, the composite propellant mix will contain a binder which is used to improve the cohesion of the ingredients. Binders form a distinct phase and tend to reduce the sensitiveness of the propellant to shock and impact. When based on organic materials, as is normally the case, they will serve as part of the fuel component also. 

Those who have imagined that it was formed in the air principle of hard bodies such as aerolites, have been mistaken, if they have regarded them as terrestrial bodies. It is a substance which belongs to the gross element of Water a fat, viscous humour, enclosed in the clouds as in a furnace, where it condensed and mixed with the sulphurous exhalations, which are warm and very inflammable. The air, which is too much compressed by this condensation, is rarefied by heat, and produces the same effect as gunpowder in a bomb the vessel breaks, the fire diffused in the air, freed from its bonds by this movement, produces that light and noise, which often startle the most intrepid. 

The bundle of tubes is then inverted and the explosive charge consisting of fine grain gunpowder and mealed gunpowder is loaded in. Finally, a clay plug is compressed on top of the gunpowder and a mealed powder primer and blue touch-paper are applied to the fuse end.

Small rockets for sale in shops are sometimes made entirely of gunpowder, which is compressed into a tube. There is no spiiidle but it is necessary to have the clay washer at the nozzle end with a smaller hole in the center. These rockets are not as beautiflil because the tail does not show so much, but there are obvious commercial advantages.
