Samples collected from nature include the very dark brown to black resin of Guiacum officinale (Zygophyllaceae), known locally as guayacan, whose resin tends to be spherical, collected by M. Canals in Guanica (Puerto Rico) and the whitish, malleable, and the highly odorous resin of Dacryodes excelsa (Burser-aceae), known locally as tabonuco, collected by F. Wadsworth and one of the...

Undoubtedly there are many modern resins, still unstudied, that may provide distinct and characteristic NMR spectra. As we describe herein, Dacryodes ex-celsa from Puerto Rico exhibits the same spectra as materials from the Bursera-ceae family from Mexico. On the other hand, a sample of resin from Guiacum officinale produces a unique new NMR spectrum.
