The primary problem with explicit solvent calculations is the significant amount of computer resources necessary. This may also require a significant amount of work for the researcher. One solution to this problem is to model the molecule of interest with quantum mechanics and the solvent with molecular mechanics as described in the previous chapter. Other ways to make the computational resource requirements tractable are to derive an analytic equation for the property of interest, use a group additivity method, or model the solvent as a continuum. 

There are a number of CRMs available for this group of elements in semm and urine (see Table 6.3). The most severe problems with the determination of these trace elements are contamination and loss. Therefore, strict protocols are necessary to prevent these problems. Contamination can be prevented by cleaning thoroughly all used utensils, and the use of highly purified chemicals. Loss is mostly due to exchange between the container walls and can be prevented by working at a pFI<2.

A final useful index of sigma nonbonded interactions between lone pairs is the partial bond order p (Xm, Yn) which is evaluated over the MO s which result from the interaction of the lone pair group MO s with the sigma HOMO and vacant MO s of the coupling unit. This index is intimately connected with the type of analysis employed in this work.
