Zr-catalyzed carbomagnesation has gained much importance sinee 1991 as a consequence of the work of Hoveyda and co-workers [7, 8]. These researchers discovered that reactions of terminal alkenes (10) with an excess of the simple Grignard reagent EtMgCI proceeded with practically complete regioselectivity (>99 1).

Usually isolated olefins or acetylenes are inert toward most nucleophilic reagents, but they undergo carbomagnesation with Grignard reagents in the presence of a copper catalyst. These reactions have been discussed in Chapter 3. 

A certain nickel salt is known to catalyze hydro- or carbomagnesation of unsaturated bonds with Grignard reagents (see Chapter 3). 

Other applications of titanium catalysts are hydromagnesation and carbomagnesation of unsaturated compounds, such as olefins and acetylenes with Grignard reagents. These are described in Chapter 3.
