Green River shale properties

Properties. The composition of shale oil has depended on the shale from which it was obtained as well as on the retorting method by which it was produced. Properties of shale oils from various locations are given in Table 8. A comparison of a Green River shale oil and a Michigan Antrim shale oil, retorted under similar conditions, is given in Table 9.

The thermal properties of Devonian shale are quite different from those of Green River oil shale. The associated pyrite in kerogen concentrate may contribute greatly to the effect on thermal degradation of Devonian gas-bearing shale. For the first time DSC was applied to determining thermal properties of Devonian shale as well as Green River oil shale. 

This paper presents results of some laboratory scale studies of the chemical and retorting properties of representative samples from five Australian oil shale deposits. In general terms, the results indicate that these shales differ significantly in their chemical properties both from each other and from the shale of the Green River deposit.
