Grazing animals, ammonia

In addition to the nitrogenous components of plants or animal tissues, soils may contain organic nitrogen as urea, which is a constituent of the urine of grazing animals and is often added to the soil as fertilizer. Urea is rapidly hydrolyzed to ammonia (Figure 8.16). This reaction is catalyzed by urease, an enzyme found practically in all soils. [Pg.271]
