The first crystalline silicon was prepared by Henri Sainte-Claire Deville in 1854 ( 9,31). In the course of his researches on aluminum, he decomposed an impure sodium aluminum chloride with the voltaic pile, and obtained a gray, brittle, granular melt containing 10.3 per cent of silicon. When he dissolved away the aluminum, some shining platelets remained.

Following Davey s preparation of potassium and sodium in 1807 by the electrolysis of a fused salt, other active metals were investigated with this technique. Lanthanum and cerium were prepared by Hillebrand and Norton (1875) and later on, these and the other light lanthanide metals by Muthmann and Weiss (1904), Hirsch (1911), Kremers and Stevens (1923), Trombe (1936) and Gray (1952). In recent years this method was refined and extended to a few of the heavy lanthanide and yttrium metals by the US Bureau of Mines group headed by Henrie and Morrice (see Morrice and Knickerbocker 1961, Beaudry and Gschneidner 1978, for more details).

The dispersive component of the surface energy 7 can be calculated from the retention time obtained from iGC measurements of a series of n-alkane probes injected at infinite dilution (concentration within the Henry"s portion of the adsorption isotherm) [8]. Two approaches are used for the evaluation of these dependencies, the first one according to Schultz and co-workers [9] Equation 4.1 and the second one according to Dorris and Gray [10] Equation 4.2 ...
