Graphis scripta

C18H12O9, Mr 372.29, needles, mp. 286-287 °C (de-comp.), poorly soluble in most organic solvents. When N. is treated with concentrated KOH solution the colorless acid first dissolves to a yellow solution which changes to red after a few seconds and precipitates the deep-red potassium complex in the form of microscopic, fine needles. N. occurs in many lichen, e.g., Parmelia acetabulum, Graphis scripta, and Aspicilia radiosa. 

Isol. from the cultured lichen mycobionts of Graphis scripta. Orange-yellow plates or columns (Mc2CO). Mp 163-165°.

Graphenone (48) is a dicarboxylic anhydride from the mycobiont of Graphis scripta its structure was elucidated by an X-ray analysis (549). The 6/5-anhydride homoheveadride (49) was isolated by Archer and Taylor (17) from Cladonia polycarpoides. 

Whiton and Lawrey found that ascospore germination of the lichens Cladonia cristatella 724), Graphis scripta and Caloplaca citrina 725) was much reduced in the presence of lichen substances. Spore germination of Cladonia cristatella and Caloplaca citrina was inhibited by vulpinic acid, evernic acid and atranorin respectively stictic acid showed no activity.
