Graft success rate

Bos et al. looked at the performance of the Zenith graft in Europe between 1999 and 2006. Two hundred and thirty-four patients were included in the study, with a mean aneurysmal diameter of 60.9 10 mm, and a neck length ranging from 10 to 100 mm, 44% being between 10 and 20 mm (Bos 2008). The technical success rate was 95.3%, but most of those patients did obtain technical success after additional components (limb and proximal extensions) were added. The third approach is in the implantation of functional tissue that is developed ex vivo. This approach attempts to create a biological substitute made from synthetic materials to be used as grafts or cardiac patches for treating HF. Clinically used materials include synthetic woven Dacron, extended polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE), and natural glutaraldehyde-fixed pericardium. These materials, however, have limited success rates due to thrombosis, inflammatory response, mechanical mismatch between native tissue and implants, aneurysm, and lack of remodeling for natural materials. ... 

The two major problems in materials behaviour in work of this type lie in the achievement of patency at the junction with natural tissue and the avoidance of unacceptable levels of thrombogenicity. In relation to the former problem, the extent to which the elastic properties of host tissue and graft are matched has previously been suggested as an important factor (i.e., this Series, Volume 1, p. 421, refs. 81 and 82). Further clinical results accumulated over a two-year period support this proposition, indicating patency success rates of over 80% in artery grafts with matched compliance and less than 45% with mismatched grafts. ...
