A number of different types of copolymers are possible with ATRP—statistical (random), gradient, block, and graft copolymers [Matyjaszewski, 2001]. Other polymer architectures are also possible—hyperbranched, star, and brush polymers, and functionalized polymers. Statistical and gradient copolymers are discussed in Chap. 6. Functionalized polymers are discussed in Sec. 3-16b. 

In Figure 6 the result of a rapid density gradient centrifugation is shown using this system. It deals with a graft copolymer latex of butadiene and styrene acrylonitrile. The gradient media are different mixtures of 3-butene-2-ol and ethylene glycol.

In the area of novel materials CMU protected (co)polymers prepared by ATRP except with CCI4 initiator and telechelic polymers prepared by CRP with MW > 20,000 (49) copolymers with a tme gradient segment (30) polar ABA block copolymers, (30) and well defined graft copolymers and segmented copolymers with one or more CRP blocks where the macroinitiator had been prepared by another polymerization process. (36) In addition, the use of tethered initiators allowed synthesis of hybrid core/shell copolymers. Pending applications disclose other novel polymeric materials.
