Ogden et al [334] discusses just this issue and point outs that the problem with specifying phonemic style representations is that this concentrates overly on the paradigmatic dimension the phonemic system is based on what contrasts occur at a particular point, and the issue of what phonemes follow what other phonemes is left to a different, phonotactic part of the phonology. In fact, we see that it is indeed possible to construct representations in which both the normal notion of phonemic contrast, and a mechanism for governing legal sequences are handled in a unified way. While phonemic representations are less susceptible to borderline decisions than phonetic representations, they are not entirely free of problems. [Pg.197]
