Purified cotton consists of the fibers of different cultivated varieties of Gossypium sp. The material is freed from adhering impurities, deprived of fatty matter, bleached, and sterilized. The length of cotton fibers is up to about 5 cm, the diameter varies between 9 to 25 pm. A typical cotton fiber is cylindrical when young, but becomes flattened and twisted as it matures. The genuine cellulose wall of the cotton fiber is covered with a waxy cuticule. Delipidation is essential in order to transform the genuine fiber to absorbent cotton wool which is readily wetted by water. [Pg.11]

Cotton fiber is made of the epidermal hairs from seeds of members of genus Gossypium. These fibers consist of hollow cylindrical tubes that are 15-22 pm in diameter, narrowing at one end. The walls of a cotton fiber are made of 90-96% cellulose, mixed with about 5% water and small amounts of pectins, and other impurities. When dried, these tubes are flat and naturally curl or twist like a ribbon. Untreated cotton has from 150 to 300 twists per inch. The fibers are from 0.5 to over 2 inches long, and are extremely thin, from 0.0005 to 0.0009 inches in diameter. [Pg.73]

Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) var. Stoneville 825 plants were grown outdoors, in 7 liter pots filled with sand, arranged in a field configuration (10 plants m ). The plants were drip-fertigated with nutrient solution 12 times per day. Soil water potential in the pots was maintained in the range of -5 to -40 IcPa. [Pg.3497]
