Nikolai Mikhailovich Yazykov (1801-46), primarily an degist, was one of the most important poets of the period. Later, Gogol considered Yazykov a kindred soul, but Yazykov s own letters are full of nasty remarks...

Few literary works have been so variously interpreted as Nikolai Gogol s enduring comic masterpiece. Dead Souls, now offered as a Norton Critical Edition. The text of the work is the acclaimed George Reavey translation it has been fully annotated. 

It is our hope that this edition will bring new readers to the humorous, artful, and phantasmagoric art of Nikolai Gogol. 

This intricate design is attributed to Nikolai Gogol himself. Meant as a front wrapper, it was reproduced as the frontispiece in the first edition of the novel in 1842. The illustrations that it contains allude to several places in the text of the book, as well as the title (skulls = dead souls ). The relative size of the lettering of the various lines is also significant. They read in English CracHiKov s Adventures or...
