Recent advances in glycobiology have significantly increased interest in nematode glycoconjugates (Dell et al., 1999a,b). As detailed structural analysis deciphers the intricate labyrinth of their molecular architecture, functional issues are beginning to be rationally addressed. It is anticipated that a better understanding of the glycobiology of nematode parasitism... 

This chapter first discusses basic structural principles relating to the main classes of glycoconjugates in order to assist understanding of nematode structures. It then focuses on a selection of parasitic nematodes where detailed structural data on glycoconjugates have been obtained in recent years and where this structural information is starting to provide insights into possible molecular functions. 

Polysaccharides, glycoproteins, and other glycoconjugates therefore may be specifically labeled on their carbohydrate portions by creating aldehyde functionalities and subsequently derivatizing them with another molecule containing an amine or a hydrazide group. This route of derivatization is probably the most common way of modifying carbohydrates. 

The rapid access to complex glycoconjugates will open the door to detailed studies concerning the structure and function of this class of biooligomers.
