Glycerol plasticized films

Glycerol and Sorbitol The effect of incorporating glycerol or sorbitol as a plasticizer in lactic acid casein films has been compared by Chick and Ustunol [32]. Films plasticized with sorbitol were significantly more effective (p < 0.05) moisture and O2 barriers than glycerol-plasticized films and also had improved mechanical properties.

Casein proteins were one of the first plastics, and they are still in use for this purpose. Thin plastic films of casein can be made by adding glycerol or sorbitol as a plasticizer, a substance that lowers the temperature at which a plastic softens, and makes it more pliable. 

Casting The slab gel is cast on a polymer film (e.g., GelBond PAG film) and polymerized. Resultant polymerized gel is washed up with deionized water, left in 2% w/v of glycerol, and dried at ambient temperature. Finally, the gel is covered with a plastic film. The shelf life of IPG gel is approximately 1 year at 20°C. 

Glycerol (plasticizer) concentration used in the hterature varied from 35 to 60g/100-g soy protein (35-39). A lower amount of plasticizer will cause drying out and cracking of the film. The intermolecular disulfide bonds resulting from the denaturing of protein and intermolecular interactions between the protein chain... 

For many years rehydratable granulated dextran (Sephadex) or polyacrylamide (Bio-Gel) gels have been used for gel chromatography and in the form of hydrated gel layers for analytical and preparative isoelectric focusing (l t, 15). Recently, rehydratable layers of granulated gels on a plastic film have been developed ( ). The presence of carrier ampholytes or addition of 1-2 % glycerol was necessary...

Amino acid chromatograms have been preserved by impregnation with collodion to which a definite amount of glycerol had been added [42, 66]. Chromatograms have also been pasted over with self-adhesive plastic film and the layer subsequently peeled off the plate [354]. Spraying with polymer dispersions (polyacrylates, polyvinylidene chloride or polyvinyl propionate) is usually more suitable [402]. Such aerosols are commercially available (Firms 88, 153). Mention may be made also of impregnation of layers by immersion in solutions of polymers although this has a restricted application (Firm 60).
