Glow wire test

Testing procedure. The specimen is pressed against a tip consisting of a U-shaped wire coil heated by an electric current. The minimum ignition temperature is measured.

Outstandingly, all the grades of at least one manufacturer pass the demanding glow wire test at 960°C at 3.2 mm.

The apparatus used for the Glow-wire test, shown in Figure 1, consists of a carriage moving on a platform. The carriage holds the 3" x 3 polymer sample which is moved horizontally towards the glowing Nickel/Chromium wire which can be heated to a temperature of 660 C and 96CPC. The polymer sample is subjected to the wire for thirty seconds with a force of 1.8 to 2.0 Newtons.

In most commercial references to FR -PBT blends, what is really meant by FR is that the materials are ignition resistant - not impervious to fire. With limited heat sources, such as in the UL-94 test [52] or the glow wire test [53], the FR blends will resist ignition or self-extinguish a small flame. However, in a large fire, these resins will bum, usually with a smoky flame.

These extmsion grades produce low levels of smoke, aroimd half of a comparable PPO alloy, and on a par with rigid PVC, often the main material chosen for many extruded electrical components such as ducts, conduits, etc. Bayblend FR 3030 even satisfies the Airbus Industrie demands on toxic fumes potentially released in aircraft cabins. It also achieves V-0 at 1.6 mm in UL94 and 1 mm components pass the glow wire test at 960 °C. The materials pass the Epiradiateur test for building panels and the German Bundesbahn test for parts in railway vehicles. 

Similarly, a glow-wire simulates a source of ignition. The glow-wire test according to VDE 0471-2-10 [4] provides information about whether an object, such as an overheating conductor, could be a fire hazard in an electrical apparatus.
