Global population growth predictions

The purpose of this chapter is to give a complete global analysis of the variable-yield model. Essentially, we confirm that the variable-yield models make the same predictions - concerning the growth of a single population, and concerning the outcome of competition between two... [Pg.182]

Billions of gallons of toxic wastes are dumped into the environment every year. Between the damage caused by our industrial lifestyles and the rampant growth in world population, many scientists have predicted that the Earth is headed for a global environmental collapse. In response, science and industry are both working on ways to reduce and limit the toxicity of compounds produced by industrial syntheses. This has led to the new field of green chemistry, in which alternative, less toxic compounds are slowly replacing their more toxic predecessors. [Pg.198]

To satisfy this demand in the future, we must realize sustainable auto-mobility. With the world s population predicted to reach 7 billion by 2015, the global car park will grow to nearly 850 million vehicles over the next 15 years if the ownership rate remains at 12%. While this represents significant growth in the demand for our products, as an industry we need to be thinking bigger than this. If the ownership rate increases just 3 points— to 15%— the car park in 2015 would exceed 1 billion vehicles. [Pg.107]
