Global civilization

The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) is the global civil organization of chemists. The Union is organized into Divisions, with Division VII being devoted to Chemistry and Human Health. The latter incorporates the Subcommittee for Medicinal Chemistry and Dmg Development which has projects in various stages of completion. One of these projects, which is devoted to Analogue-Based Drug Discovery , was initiated in 2003. 

As we embark upon the twenty-first century, two specters threaten global civilization. One is the prospect of economic disarray and incitement to war caused by the local depletion and global maldistribution of high quality fossil fuels, especially oil. The second is the prospect of almost unimaginable environmental, economic, and cultural disruption caused by climate volatility and triggered, primarily, by our energy system s carbon dioxide effluent. 

As such, this transformation demands reflection not only upon the effects it may hold for African Americans and the repositioning it portends for other people of color in the United States hut also upon the dissemination of a racist culture fundamental to the legacies of Western modernity and the deeply uneven emergence of global civil society.

The story of opium is one of both individual and global conflict. It is a story of alleviating pain and inspiring genius, of addiction, escape, and freedom, of contradictions and mystery. Above all, the story of opium is one of constant mutation within the instability and evolution of human consumption and addiction. The story is as relevant today as it was during the great opium wars of the mid-nineteenth century, yet it stretches back into the far reaches of human civilization. 

Economics and politics also intersected in Whitehall s perception in 1956 of the Soviet Union as a threat to Britain s share of international trade. In May of that year, when arguing that Britain could not afford a policy of perfection in defence, Eden noted that there was evidence that the Russians intended to concentrate on industrial exports. In order to be able to meet this competition, part of the burden placed on British industry by defence orders must be reduced, so as to release resources for civil production. In present circumstances, he said, economic failure was a more serious risk than global war, and defence plans had to be adjusted to this revised political assessment. He added that a recent report from the ambassador in Washington showed that President Eisenhower was thinking along the same lines.The Russians made no secret of their intentions. In November 1957 Nikita Khrushchev, the Soviet leader, declared in a visit to the United States in the peaceful field of trade we declare a war. The threat to the United States is not in the intercontinental ballistic missile but in the field of peaceful production. We are relentless in this and will prove the superiority of our system. ...
