In the course of time an enterprising firm, with the aid of chemists and from indigenous sources, produced supplies of potash of high quality in sufficient bulk for the imperative requirements of glass makers, and this factor was of no small consequence, since it is admitted that for certain glasses potash is practically indispensable. 

Potash from terrestrial plants was essential to carry this process through and became a strategic product As it was also used for manufacturing glass and soap, competition arose. At the end of the 18 century the situation became critical, with a lack of potash because of extensive deforestation in central Europe and high import costs... 

Potassium carbonate, the component in the old potash, is stiU used for the production of high-quahty glass. Potassium chlorate is used in match-heads. Saltpeter was once used in gunpowder and is now found in explosives, fireworks and matches.
