Glass fiber boards

Glass fiber boards are manufactured from glass microfibers with a diameter of less than Ipm, by pressing into plates [44]. The heat treatment at 500 C after the pressing ensures the stability of the shape. The boards have a low compressibility (about 5 percent). This will be obtained by adjusting the density of the boards to 0.3 gcm .  

Glass fiber board consisting of a boro-silicate glass shows a thermal conductivity under pressure which is dependent on the temperature (Table 17). There is a natural concern about the safety of any fiber mate- 

In order to control the three factors determining heat transfer, much effort has been spent on developing vacuum insulation for high-temperature batteries involving the use of microporous powders pressed to boards, glass fiber boards, or multifoil insulation. 

The disadvantages of multifoil insulation jackets are the high compressibility (about 20% under atmospheric pressure), the low residual gas pressure necessary after evacuation (less than 10 mbar), and the high cost

There is a natural concern about the safety of any fiber material which has the potential to give off particles which can be inhaled. In a report on health risks with microglass fibers [46], it was stated that glass fibers may cause skin, eye, and upper respiratory tract irritation but do not cause cancer or diseases like asbestosis. It was found that the fine fibers wiU dissolve slowly but steadily in bodily fluids and wiU be more readily cleared from the lung.
