Glasgow Queen Margaret College

The College steadily expanded, adding science laboratories in 1888 and a medical school in 1890. In 1892, the College was merged into the University of Glasgow. A student reported in 1902 As a general rule the women attend the same classes as the men, occupying the front benches. 85 [Pg.291]

By the 1920s and 1930s, one would have expected that the presence of women at Glasgow was an established fact, but this was not the case. In 1924, Miss Sheavyn, Director of Women Students at the Victoria University of Manchester, sent a letter to Melville enquiring whether QMC-UG would like to participate in a survey on women students at university and particularly on any health issues. Melville s reply was very negative  [Pg.291]


For Scotland (see Chap. 7), Glasgow was the overwhelming choice of women chemists. In part, this was probably due to the existence of a separate women s college, Queen Margaret College, in the early years while the total for Edinburgh includes Heriot-Watt College (later Heriot-Watt University). [Pg.41]
