The impact of geotextile degradation may be realized immediately, gradually, or suddenly after an extended period of time. These modes of degradation are depicted in Fig. 9.1 and the subsequent discussion. 

The lightweight nonwoven needlepunched geotextile degrades the fastest and reaches half-hfe in a few months.

Geotextile degradation Different degradation mechanisms can affect the properties and even the consistency of geotextiles. For soil reinforcement, it is important to evaluate how the mechanical properties will eventually change from the as-manufactured state.
