Geogrid reinforcement

Though economical, the use of an uncrushed stone layer can cause a decrease in the stability and the holding capacity of crushed granular cover. To circumvent this, a geogrid reinforcement is incorporated within the construction. However, further problems can stiU arise with the longer-term stability of the railway track.

There is a large variety in reinforcement techniques with geosynthetics, from a simple horizontally placed reinforcement underneath embankments to steep geo-textile/geogrid reinforced slopes. 

For open graded base or thin bases over wet. fine grained subgrades, a separation geotextile should be considered with geogrid reinforcement. 

As previously mentioned in Section 14.2, other mechanistic response models focused on geogrid-reinforced flexible pavements, considering the stiffening effect of the aggregate owing to confinement above and below the reinforcement (Kwon et al., 2005, 2008 Al-Qadi et al., 2008).
