Genetic Engineering Companies

These concepts are utilized in examining several cases described in the literature MIT Polymer Processing Program, Harvard-Monsanto Research Project, Rockwell Internatlonal-Black Colleges, NSF Innovation Centers, Harvard University-Genetic Engineering Company. 

Prompted by Harvard s disclosure that it was considering establishment of a commercial genetic-engineering company, this article reports on a range of Issues and activities in the university-industry area. In addition to the standard examples of Exxon-MIT and Harvard-Monsanto, mention is made of a Purdue-Control Data project on computer design and production, and establishment by Estee Lauder of an Institute of Dermatology at Johns Hopkins University.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in that genetically altered life forms can be patented a Supreme Court decision in 1980 allowed the Exxon oil company to patent an oil-eating microorganism. This ruling opened up enormous possibilities for commercially exploiting genetic engineering. 

U.S. patents were granted to companies genetically engineering plants. 

Genetic Sciences surreptitiously performed the first deliberate release experiment, injecting genetically engineered microbes into trees growing on the company s roof, while waiting for approval from the EPA to conduct a different deliberate release experiment involving strawberry plants.
