Genes human genome project

The promise of being able to predict and modify the genetic characteristics of an organism fuelled massive efforts to determine the base sequences of human genes. The human genome project has now reached the goal of sequencing all the important DNA carried by humans.

One driver for new discovery will be the completion of the human genome project. As a result of this project, the locations and sequences associated with the tens of thousands of genes of the human genome will have been determined. In the post-genomic era, then, we will know the DNA sequences and genes of a human being, but that is only the start. What are the functions associated with these sequences We will need to isolate the proteins that are the gene products,... 

The number of genetic diseases for which the actual gene responsible has been identified and studied are relatively modest, although completion of the human genome project should rapidly accelerate identification of such genes. 

H4 receptors are very similar to H3 receptors in gene structure and signal transduction, but show limited expression in the brain. The H4 receptor gene was identified in 2000 as a direct consequence of the human genome project. Use of the human H3 receptor sequence led to the identification of a related orphan GPCR. 

A gene is the basic physical and functional unit of heredity. Genes, which are made up of DNA, act as instructions to make molecules called proteins. In humans, genes vary in size from a few hundred DNA bases to more than 2 million bases. The Human Genome Project has estimated that humans have between 20,000 and 25,000 genes.
