Generation of pure CO

This route has been developed up to conunercial applications. In step (a), copper-based catalysts are used to dehydrogenate CH OH (27 j. The pyrolysis of methyl formate (step (b)) to give CO is well known. 

Synthesis of styrene. The alkylation of toluene with methanol over a CsX-zeolite catalyst produces a mixture of ethylbenzene and styrene (Equation (9)). 

Ring alkylation, as utilized in the manufacture of cresol from phenol, is suppressed and toluene selectivjiies arc liigh (40). 

To activate methanol, the two principal ways shown in Equation (lO) and (11) can be considered. 

The reaction of Equation (10) has been mimiced In model reactions. Methanol can be added to a lr(l) complex, as is shown in Equation (12) (29).

Generation of pure CO. Usually, high-purity CO is manufactured on a large scale by means of cryogenic separation or absorption from a gas mixture such as CO/H2. Methanol can be used as a raw material according to Scheme 6 [26].
