The preparation of fibre for MDF uses an impact device (the refiner) to separate the fibres but this follows a thermal pretreatment that softens the lignin. Consequently separation oeeurs in the lignin-rich middle lamella between the fibres so preserving as mueh of the eellulosic fibre structure as possible. The preparation of MDF fibre is eonsidered later. 

The final moisture content of the particles leaving the dryer is in the range 2-5%. This is determined by the moisture content required in the press which is made up of that in the particles after drying and the moisture added with the resin. 

Mixing the adhesive with the partieles is eritieal in maximizing the resin performanee and the approaeh again depends on the partiele size. The aim is to have every partiele eontribute to the strength of the eomposite so that the resin partieles need to be as small as possible and distributed uniformly over the surfaee. On eontaeting the dry partieles moisture passes from the resin to the partieles so the viseosity of the attached resin droplet increases.
