General Tire and Rubber

Two types of networks were prepared (i) randomly crosslinked polybutadiene, and (ii) model urethane networks, (a) polybutadiene based, and (b) poly(e-caprolactone) based. The randomly crosslinked networks were prepared from polybutadiene (Duragen 1203 obtained from General Tire and Rubber Co.) crosslinked with di-cumyl peroxide. Specifications of the as obtained polybutadiene are given in Table I. Polybutadiene was purified by dissolving in benzene and precipitating in methanol. The rubbers may be vulcanized by conventional accelerated sulphur systems and are characterized by good low temperature and dynamic properties with a constancy of many properties over a wide temperature range. They do however possess only moderate oil resistance. First introduced as Dynagen XP-139 (General Tire and Rubber Co.) they are now marketed by Hercules as Parel.

Hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene can be prepared from polymers having two living ends by addition of oxides, aldehydes, or ketones [279,282,285]. HTPB prepared by ionic methods is commercially available from Phillips Petroleum Company and General Tire and Rubber Company. The former supplies a secondary hydroxyl-terminated product and General Tire and Rubber Company produces both primary and secondary hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene.
