Industrial effluents are a particularly difficult problem to discuss in general terms their nature is very diverse, possible methods of treatment vary correspondingly and their acceptability depends as much on the receiving body as on their flow and contents. There are, however, some common factors which are worth mentioning. 

The treatment in this chapter has been theoretical. For a brief, dear, and very practical description of computational details for a number of standard problems, [10] is unsurpassed, and [12] can be recommended for programming techniques for automatic computers. For information on ordinary differential equations, the reader should consult [2], and for partial differential equations, [1]. For general methods of reduction to algebraic form as well as methods of solution, see [5], [7], and [8]. 

The production of mica for polymer applications has been reviewed by Hawley [89]. The aim of the processing is to purify the deposit and to produce particles of relatively small diameter with an aspect ratio of 50-200. The natural minerals are generally of much larger size than required and so the milling has both to delaminate and fracture the particles. The milling is the key process and a variety of methods, both wet and dry, are used, accompanied by various classification methods. Surface modification is important in many mica applications and a variety of treatments are used, especially organo-silanes. The methods of treatment are generally not disclosed. 

In addition to the general treatments of wavy flow, a number of theories concerning the stability of film flow have been published in these the flow conditions under which waves can appear are determined. The general method of dealing with the problem is to set up the main equations of flow (usually the Navier-Stokes equations or the simplified Nusselt equations), on which small perturbations are imposed, leading to an equation of the Orr-Sommerfeld type, which is then solved by various approximate means to determine the conditions for stability to exist. The various treatments are lengthy, and only the briefest summaiy of the results can be given here. 

The method of treatment is generally dictated by the pressure range of the unit. 

The reader is assumed to be familiar with the elements of stereochemical theory and terminology and with at least the main features of the more common general methods of resolution.
