General Conditions for Coupling Reactions

To a solution of the saccharide in toluene/ethanol (1 2, 100lmol ), hydrazine acetate (5 equiv) was added. After about 1 h of magnetic stirring (TLC), the solvent was concentrated under reduced pressure and the residue was purified using silica gel column chromatography to furnish a glycosyl acceptor. 

Ceneral Conditions for Olefin Cross Metathesis Reactions 

A solution of pentenyl glycoside, alkene (2 equiv), and generation 1 or 2 Grubbs catalyst (0.1 equiv) in dichloromethane (50lmol ) was refluxed for 6h. After concentration under reduced pressure, the residue was purified using sihca gel column chromatography to yield the desired glycoside. 

To a solution in DMF (90lmol ) of the saccharide, EtjNsulfur trioxide complex (5 equiv) was added. After 17 h of magnetic stirring at 55 °C with protection from UghL the reaction mixture was cooled to 0°C and an excess of MeOH was added.
