Marsden returned to his native New Zealand in 1915 where, on Rutherford s recommendation, he was appointed professor of physics at Victoria University in Wellington. Ele held various academic and governmental posts until his retirement in 1954. The national fund for the support of science in New Zealand was renamed the Sir Ernest Marsden Eund in his honor. Geiger, Hans Wilhelm (1882-1945) German physicist, who carried out research with Rutherford at Manchester University before returning to Germany in 1912. In 1908 he and Rutherford produced the Geiger counter, improved in 1928 as the Geiger-Mtiller counter. In 1909 his scattering experiments with alpha particles led to Rutherford s nuclear theory of the atom. [Pg.347]

Geiger, Hans Wilhelm (1882-1945)AGermanphysicistwith an interest in radioactivity and cosmic rays, and who worked with Ernest Rutherford (1871-1937). He worked in Manchester and then in various centres in Germany. He is noted for the Geiger counter, an instrument he invented for detecting charged particles. Forms of the instrument are sufficiently sensitive to detect beta-particles (electrons) and gamma-radiation. [Pg.167]
