Gears pressure angle

Two important characteristics of gear teeth are the profile and the pressure angle. In particular, special tooth profiles must be used for higher gear speeds. As speeds increase, friction increases the heat released because of sliding contact between the teeth.

Figure 57.25 illustrates the effect of different pressure angles on a tooth. It is important to note that the pressure angle must be the same for all mated gears that run together. 

Internal gears can only be run with an external gear of the same type, pitch, and pressure angle. The preload and induced load will depend on the type of gears used. Refer to spur or helical for axial and radial forces. 

This type of winding (Figure 21.60) is used to wind most axial fibers for domed pressure vessels. The arm rotates about a vertical axis and can be set to different angles of tilt. Gearing provides mandrel rotation relative to the arm. 

Molten polymer is delivered by the planetary extruder to the exit of the extruder by the forwarding, or pumping, action of the turning central shaft, the planetary rollers in cooperation with the outer cylinder wall. The uniformity of the discharge pressure will be dependent on the rotational speed and the design characteristics of the planetary rollers and the helix angle of the planetary gearing.
