Gastric motility disorders

Anticholinergics (cholinergic blocking drug) reduce gastric motility and decrease the amount of acid secreted by the stomach (see Chap. 25). Examples of anticholinergics used for GI disorders include propantheline (Pro-Banthine) and glycopyrrolate (Robinul). 

The depressant effect of EOs on smooth muscle in the small intestine is consistent with the therapeutic uses of these aromatic plants as gastrointestinal anti-spasmodics and carminatives [224]. In vitro studies showed that EOs produced the inhibition of gastric motility, and are thus the basis of the treatment of some gastrointestinal disorders [225, 226].

From the studies described above, it is evident that motilides not only stimulate gastric motility but also accelerate delayed gastric emptying in certain clinical conditions. As the next step, the clinical benefit to patients with gastrointestinal disorders (e.g., symptom relief) needs to be proved in double-blind and placebo-controlled studies. Motilides seem to offer an additional therapeutic possibility for the treatment of patients with impaired gastric motor function. 

Gi disorders Doses administered to patients with ulcerative colitis may suppress Gl motility and produce paralytic ileus and precipitate or aggravate toxic megacolon. Administer ER tablets with caution to patients with Gl obstructive disorders because of the risk of gastric retention.
