For "gasless" heat and delay compositions, little external pressure effect is expected. This result, plus the increase in burning rate observed with an increase in loading pressure, can be considered good evidence for the absence of any significant gas-phase involvement in a particular combustion mechanism. 

Contrary to the behavior expected for "gassy" mixtures, the rate of burning for gasless compositions is expected to increase (in units of grams reacting per second) as the eonsolidation pressure is increased. "Gasless" delays propagate via heat transfer... 

Delay compositions are mixtures of materials which, when pressed into delay tubes, react without evolution of gaseous products and thus ensure the minimum variation in the delay period. Examples of such mixtures are potassium permanganate with antimony lead dioxide or minium with silicium redox reactions with fluorides and other halides (- also Coruscatives and -+ delay gasless). 

Delay compositions often have gasless reactions, which rely heavily on conductive energy feedback for propagation. A crack through the composition seriously reduces the amount of thermal energy fedback and can result in a failure to propagate. 

Delay compositions are divided into two types gasless (e.g. metal oxides or metal chromates with an elemental fuel) and gassy (e.g. blaekpowder). Gasless delays are used in conditions of confinement (e.g. bombs, grenades, projectiles) or at high altitudes, where it is important that there are no variations of normal,...
